match report - Watsonians 4XV v IRFC 2XV - SAT 05 SEP 09
Score: Inverleith 14 Watsonians “more than 14”
On a blustery Saturday afternoon Inverleith 2nd XV took the field for their first outing of the season. The team boasted a wealth of experience (in reality a bunch of old buggers) as well a splattering of youth.
The youngest person to take the field, however, was the referee, who was reffing his first ever match, aged 15... Both teams to their credit didn’t moan too much about some dubious decisions and pretty much just got on with it. So credit to both teams on that score – and well done to the ref.
The final score most certainly did not reflect the pattern of play in what was a pretty close contested game. With the first XV match postponed due to the weather (an atrocious decision by the council to call it off) the 2nd XV was bolstered in the pack by Rodders, Hammy and Marco and the back division by John Threadgall. Gus was coaxed out of retirement by Brendan and played at 10 and it was great to see Ed Granville back on the rugby pitch after some bad injuries.
Jack Kerr is probably the oldest man to ever play rugby and acquitted himself admirably as per usual. Some of the guys who are newer to the game such as Tomy, Rob and Boab also battled away well.
General fitness and lack of organisation in defence – especially after two or three phases – were our undoing.
Despite the score Inverleith spent more than their fair share in Watsonians territory and got their re wards in the shape of two well taken tries. One by Ed Granville in the first half and the other by Rodney in the second half. Both converted by Gus.
Inverleith also had a few chances to get more scores on the board but some excellent defence by Watsonians and the odd dropped pass prevented this happening.
Nevertheless it was a good first outing for the seconds against a good Watsonians outfit and the guys can keep their heads held high after this battling performance. Great to have a full second XV take the field.
